Body composition is a term used to describe the different components that, when taken together, make up a person's body weight. The human body is composed of two general categories of body mass, lean body mass and body fat mass. Lean body mass includes a variety of tissue types like bones, muscles, and organs that are metabolically active. Body fat consists of two basic types, essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat is required for normal physiological functioning, and storage fat constitutes the fat reserves of the body. Fat tissue is not metabolically active.
